LAS VEGAS DAY05 - Mandalay Bay Rec Centre, AI/ML for innovation at speed and scale, DeepRacer All Stars, Gordon Ramsay Fish and Chips

Breakfast at the Venetian

As usual, the first activity of the day is to grab breakfast. Initially I wanted to have breakfast at Mandalay Bay but decided to have breakfast first at the usual Venetian before taking a shuttle to Mandalay Bay.

Plushy Flamingos at the hotel shop

Ah, the Venetian... It is actually crazily close to the look and feel of the real Venice in Italy.

Here is a morning selfie in front of the fountain

Do the convention thing! Take a photo with the AWS mascot

The breakfast line

The breakfast - some sausage and ham with fruit. I took a lot of fruit. It may be my only fibre of the day.

After breakfast, it was straight to Mandalay via shuttle. Embarrassingly, I managed to miss the session despite arriving really early (That is a story for later).

Luxor - The pyramid.

And we are here, Mandalay Bay.

At Mandalay Bay (Rec Centre, AI/ML for innovation at speed and scale, and Lunch)

This story is amusing. I somehow managed to turn up early but missed my intended session because I had it in my mind that the session was 1030 instead of 1000. Perhaps I had too much fun at the Rec Centre...

Here I am, arrived before 10 am and just looking to spend time exploring until my session starts...

The Rec Centre. I was informed that it only opens at 10 am.

So I look at what activities they have. 5K run? Nah.

Wow. Amazed that they even have this. What is the insurance like?

Finally open at 10 am. Going in to take a look.

Free drinks are expected.

There is a NFL display near the entrance...

American football. Of course they love it here.

The Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Super Bowl Rings. I wonder how much is in that case.

Basketball game! I sucked at this. Couldn't shoot the ball high enough (keeps hitting the roof).

Chess!

Beside it is some AI chess thing with robot arms.

You can golf if you like.

Or play table tennis.

You can even do some jewellery stamping.

Or take some free kicks

But of course, I chose to spend most of my time on Lego

I built this Lego rocket and the man who was staffing the area came to me and told me his daughter works with SpaceX. He showed me a photo of the launch control room at Cape Canaveral.

Adding my build to the community build...

All done!

AI/ML: A trigger for innovation at speed and scale

At this point of time I had embarrassingly missed my session and was contemplating just leaving. However, some quick checking and I managed to get another session that interested me. And this session was good.

The lineup of three speakers...

Interesting perspective from Jeff Bezos

AWS's needs AI/ML to deliver the best customer experience possible.

Amazon’s average speed of delivery is 2x faster than their competition

The customer promise.

Powering the customer promise.

What is the state of your package at every point of delivery?

Not so straightforward. Instead of reaching for obvious solutions, solve to optimize.

Less than 3 hours pack time, 5hrs later a trailer is leaving (example of how the deliveries work)

Speed is a choice.

In this example, for a person who has a nut allergy, if the item they ordered came from a warehouse that handles a lot of nut products, the delivery could lead to their allergies being triggered, compromising the customer's safety. By using AI/ML, these safety threats can be predicted and avoided.

Which packaging to use? Cardboard box? Or mailer envelopes?

How will the packing staff know which to use?

AI/ML can propose the correct packaging for the staff to use, not just for one product, but also products of similar shape, size and nature.

Cardboard or mailer? Hint: Am I reading this? Or displaying it?

Another example... Is this a collector's item? A gift? Or just a toy for children?

More mailers in use now.

Not just MEETING needs...

But providing a choice to empower customers to make good decisions.

Cannot compromise on customer experience with the AI tests

E.g. AI used to provide suggestions to call operators based on other customer’s calls

Customer reviews are summarized with AI

 Change speaker

 Cross function teams
Data marketplace to find data tools
Using automation to remove tedious and repetitive tasks
A lot of POCs but cannot go to production (mindset obstacles)
Amazon is customer obsession x culture x technology
Data Strategy is the most important pitfall in starting AI/ML projects... But don't wait too long, just do it! (Think about scaling from the start)

LUNCH + Leaving Mandalay Bay
Well, all the activities at Mandalay Bay are done. Time to head back to the Venetian. But first... Lunch!
Lunch is good. Especially when provided free.
Some virtual aquarium thing...
The free shuttles ferrying the re:Invent participants around.
Mandalay Bay
Allegiant Stadium
Vegas...Flat.
Back at the Venetian/Flamingo...
Did the DataDog Slide! I had to.
My convention plunder...

DeepRacer All Stars

I wish I had ended my re:Invent experience on a high but this was nothing but torture. I did not understand anything here and ended up leaving halfway.

Started fine...

Then this...

Don't panic... try to survive this.

Ah dammit. I quit.

Dinner at Gordon Ramsay's Fish and Chips

This was good. I'm glad to have tried this.
